This new, BMW designed car doesn't have much to do with the original one... And talking about the original Mini, it really wasn't about "safety, comfort and advanced functions". The writer, it seems, isn't familiar with what the Mini originally was about at all. The current model might be all that, but those things cannot be regarded as reasons for those decades of popularity. That Mini has not really been in production for over 40 years.
