It had no safety features keeping up with the American market. This trend toward safety also affected the Jaguar XK-E by eliminating the beautiful chrome bumpers in exchange for bulky and ugly black rubber bumpers in order to keep it imported to the U.S. The EV-1 looked like a good fuel alternative considering the price of gas immediately shot up from 32 cents to 78 cents a gallon overnight. But, the EV-1 only moved 28 MPH, and ran about 30 miles before needing 14 hours to recharge. That wouldn't qualify it for a daily driver, and Americans usually pull out their speed cars for the weekends, so the EV-1 was doomed from the beginning.
